PROJECTS

Our mission is to establish a research environment recognized for its proactive position and high standards of anatomy and medical education research.

The department is currently involved in two research activities:

1

Investigating anatomical variations through the use of ultrasound

This project provides evidence that ultrasound can be used effectively not only during clinical procedures and bedside investigations, but also as a relatively inexpensive tool to study relationships between structures and anatomical variations.

ULTRASOUND PROJECTS

2

Investigating the impact of different strategies on teaching and learning anatomy

The project was inspired from a pilot study that aims to investigate different tools used in the anatomy curriculum in St. George’s KBTSP at Northumbria University and their effect on students’ understanding and appreciation of anatomical relations in the human body. Different learning tools have different impact on the student’s educational experience. The effect of different imaging modalities including CT, x-rays and ultrasound; peer-teaching, case-based learning and lecturing on anatomy education are being investigated. It also aims to explore the effect of these learning tools in enforcing non-cognitive skills such as teamwork and communication.
